3rd place prize for paper at CMBES 37 Conference

Congratulations to Melissa Barazandegan whose paper won the 3rd place prize at the 37th Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society (CMBES 37) Conference, held in Vancouver in May this year. The paper, which was presented by Melissa, was entitled “Self- Assessment of Insulin Sensitivity”. DETAILS

CHBE Research Day October 1, 2014

CHBE Research Day is an annual event focused on Gearing for a Sustainable Future. This year’s event takes place on October 1 at the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, UBC. The keynote speakers this year are Professor Michael Hoffmann and Dr. Roger Gaudreault. The event also features research and technical presentations, poster sessions and industry exhibits. DETAILS

Dr. Jimmy Feng is appointed Peter Wall Institute Scholar

Congratulations to CHBE’s Dr. Jimmy Feng on being appointed a Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies UBC Scholar for 2014 - 2015. Dr. Feng plans to use his year in residence to carry out research in modeling cell mechanics, tissue morphogenesis and ferro-fluid self-assembly during his year in residence. DETAILS

Hafiz Rahman wins Killam Graduate Teaching Assistant Award

Congratulations to Hafiz Rahman, CHBE PhD candidate, for winning the UBC Killam Graduate Teaching Assistant Award for his outstanding contribution to teaching. His energy, enthusiasm and diligence in fulfilling his teaching responsibilities have made a positive impact on the quality of the learning environment at UBC. DETAILS

WEST 2014: Inaugural UBC student conference brings together water community

The inaugural Water & Environment Student Talks (WEST) took place this June at UBC. The conference brought together graduate students, young professionals and academics from across the Pacific Northwest. DETAILS

Chem E car 2014 team takes first place in April regionals

The CHBE ChemECar Team came first among 32 teams in the Regional competition in Pullman Washington on April 28, 2014. The team’s car was within 35 cm of the target. DETAILS

CHBE host second annual YES, July 2014

The second annual Electrochemical Society BC (ECSBC) Student Chapter held this year’s Young Electrochemists’ Symposium (YES) at CHBE. As well as a poster session, the symposium included talks and prizes for the best posters. DETAILS

Dr. Xiaotao (Tony) Bi inducted Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering

Congratulations to CHBE professor Dr. Anthony Bi who was one of 49 new Fellows inducted into the Canadian Academy of Engineering at a ceremony that took place in Saint John's on June 26, 2014 in conjunction with the Academy’s 2014 Annual General Meeting and Symposium. DETAILS

John Grace Invested an Officer of the Order of Canada

UBC Chemical & Biological Engineering professor John Grace was invested with the Order of Canada in a ceremony at Rideau Hall on Wednesday May 7, 2014. He is among 10 new Officers of the Order of Canada - one of Canada's highest civilian honours, recognizing a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to community and service to Canada. Dr. Grace’s award recognises his contributions as a chemical engineer, notably to the development of cleaner technology for industrial processes and energy production. DETAILS

UBC team led by Prof. David Wilkinson wins CCEMC funding
