Four 4th-year students (Heather Kempthorne, Wendy Cheng, Cherie Tan and Anastasia Gumelia) win the E-Fest 2012 Community Service Learning (CSL) Award for their outstanding contributions to community development while undertaking their 4th year problem based laboratory. The project relates to the development of a method to monitor carbon sequestration by eelgrass (photo). The Comox Project Watershed hopes to use carbon offset credits to plant more eelgrass into the Comox Estuary. Read more here.
On March 1st, four students from AIT arrived at the UBC campus. While their school recovers from floods suffered in 2011, these graduate students will continue their research work with the help of Dr. Peter Englezos and Dr. Mark Martinez from our department, as well as Dr. James Olson in Mechanical Engineering. The Dean's office, the VPRI scholarship award, as well as each supervisor are helping cover costs of the travel and living costs of these students. Do say "hello" when you see Ms. Pattira Pattarasopachai, Mr. Zulfauzein Nadra, Mr. Dimas Dwi Prasetyo Nugroho, and Ms. Sri Wahdini Rahmi in the halls. Read more here.

UBC REC League 2011-2012
Congratulations to "CHEM ENG HAWKS" for winning the championship in UBC REC men's volleyball league. The Graduate Student Club coordinated and organized two volleyball teams (Men's and Co-rec) and a futsall team to represent CHBE in UBC REC 2011-2012 leagues.
CHBE is looking for players to join their sports teams for the next season and HAWKS are looking forward to defending their title! Contact Alireza , sport coordinator of GSC, in room 6.03 for any inquiries regarding sport activities in CHBE.

Congratulations to our graduate students James Butler and Nagu Daraboina who were awarded the John R. GRACE Graduate Scholarship in Chemical and Biological Engineering. This scholarship has been endowed in honour of Dr. John R. Grace by his wife, Dr. Sherrill E. Grace, for graduate students in Chemical and Biological Engineering who demonstrate academic excellence and potential for service to society by performing research on energy, the environment, and/or multi-phase systems. The award is made on the recommendation of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
