The Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering (CHBE) provides exciting opportunities to learn about the transformation of raw materials into valuable products by chemical, biochemical, physical or electrochemical processes, as well as energy generation (bio, electro & thermo).
Congratulations to CHBE Adjunct Professor, Shahab Sokhansanj, one of the recipients of the 2013 Standards Developer Award from the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE). Shahab will be recognized at the 2013 ASABE Annual International
Meeting in Kansas City, Missouri during the General Session on July 22nd, for his exemplary leadership and work in the revision of a very
important Standard that deals with Densified Products for Bulk Handling.
On July 20th, 2013, the Tyler Lewis Clean Energy Research Foundation will support Sean McBeath in a very exciting fundraiser to honour his dear friend, Tyler Lewis. Sean, with the support of two long time racing friends Liam Fisher and Dion Maxwell, will kayak from the inner harbor of Victoria to downtown Vancouver, a 135 km voyage, in under 24 hours - something that has never been done before.

Congratulations to Claudio Arato, an alumnus of the Chemical and Biological Engineering department, for being awarded the Community Leadership Award 2013 at the 2013 Engineering Excellence Celebration held on April 10th at the Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Vancouver. The Community Leadership Award 2013 recognized Claudio’s extraordinary commitment toward the betterment of engineering profession and the community at large. In a short speech, Claudio acknowledged the contributions of his parents, wife, mentors and colleagues to the successes of his life.

Congratulations to Dr. Mohammed Alaqqad, PhD (CHBE '11) for being awarded the CJChE Best Paper Award for the manuscript "The Permeability of Wood-Chip
Beds: The Effect of Compressibility, Can J Chem Eng 2012, 90, 1278-1288." Congratulations also extended to Drs. D.M. Martinez and C.P.J. Bennington (posthumous) who are authors on the manuscript and co-supervised Dr. Alaqqad. The award certificate will be awarded during the awards banquet at the 63rd Canadian Chemical Engineering Conference in Fredericton, October 2013.
Dr. Kevin J. Smith was elected to the Fellowship of Engineers of Canada at a ceremony on March 7th in honor of exceptional contribution to the engineering profession in Canada. On behalf of the department and University, we congratulate our CHBE Professor on this great honor and accomplishment. Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS) Fellowship
Congratulations to PhD candidate Saad Dara who won the Pacific Institute for Climate Solution (PICS) Fellowship for his PhD studies. Saad was one of 7 students across British Columbia, and one of two students from UBC to receive the award. | DETAILS
