UBC FloBeau team wins WEFTEC 2014 Design Competition
FloBeau, a UBC undergraduate team has won 1st place in the Environmental Division of the WEFTEC Student Design Competition. The competition took place on Sunday September 28, 2014 and was part of the Water Environment Federation’s Annual Technical Exhibition and Conference (WEFTEC) held in New Orleans September 27 to October 1, 2014.
The FloBeau team is Stephen Bertulli, Robert D’Amours, David Houghton, David Saabas and Michael Thiessen. The team’s faculty advisor is Noboru Yonemitsu.
CHBE Research Day October 1, 2014
CHBE Research Day is an annual event focused on Gearing for a Sustainable Future. This year’s event takes place on October 1 at the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, UBC. The keynote speakers this year are Professor Michael Hoffmann and Dr. Roger Gaudreault. The event also features research and technical presentations, poster sessions and industry exhibits. DETAILS
Dr. Jimmy Feng is appointed Peter Wall Institute Scholar
Congratulations to CHBE’s Dr. Jimmy Feng on being appointed a Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies UBC Scholar for 2014 - 2015. Dr. Feng plans to use his year in residence to carry out research in modeling cell mechanics, tissue morphogenesis and ferro-fluid self-assembly during his year in residence. DETAILS
Hafiz Rahman wins Killam Graduate Teaching Assistant Award
Congratulations to Hafiz Rahman, CHBE PhD candidate, for winning the UBC Killam Graduate Teaching Assistant Award for his outstanding contribution to teaching. Prof. David Wilkinson becomes Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada
Congratulations to CHBE Professor Dr. David Wilkinson who has been elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society of Canada in recognition of his contributions in advancing knowledge and scholarship in Canada.
He joins Drs. Grace and Haynes who are also RSC members.
Dr. Xiaotao (Tony) Bi inducted Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering
Congratulations to CHBE professor Dr. Anthony Bi who was one of 49 new Fellows inducted into the Canadian Academy of Engineering at a ceremony that took place in Saint John's on June 26, 2014 in conjunction with the Academy’s 2014 Annual General Meeting and Symposium. DETAILS

John Grace Invested an Officer of the Order of Canada
UBC Chemical & Biological Engineering professor John Grace was invested with the Order of Canada
in a ceremony at Rideau Hall on Wednesday May 7, 2014. He is among 10 new Officers of the Order of Canada - one of Canada's highest civilian honours, recognizing a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to community and service to Canada. Dr. Grace’s award recognises his contributions as a chemical engineer, notably to the development of cleaner technology for industrial processes and energy production. DETAILS
