CHBE Professor Peter Englezos is the inaugural Professorship holder of the Advanced Papermaking Initiative (API), appointed by the Dean of Applied Science and commencing December 1, 2007. The API endowment fund was established to support education and research in advanced papermaking and the Professorship will provide an increased profile to this activity.
Peter Englezos joined the Department as an Assistant Professor in 1990. He served as Coordinator of the non-thesis Pulp and Paper Master of Engineering Program between 1992-1999. Since January 2006, he is the Director of the API . In 1995 he established the papermaking chemistry laboratory at the UBC Pulp and Paper Centre. Research in the laboratory focuses on how to optimally use additives (mineral fillers, retention aid chemicals and others) in mechanical pulp suspensions in order to produce high-value communications-grade papers. The laboratory has established strong links with the BC papermaking industry and more recently with the chemical supplier industry. This integrated approach is needed to tackle more effectively the complex issues facing BC’s paper industry. Dr. Englezos is a registered Professional Engineer in British Columbia and Greece/ European Union.
