The first CHBE Professional Development Seminar, organized by the CHBE Graduate Club, was successfully held on November 26th with Professor Peter Englezos as the speaker. After completing his PhD, Dr. Englezos has worked as faculty member for more than 20 years at UBC. In addition to teaching and research, he has been serving as the head of our department since 2009.
In his presentation, Professor Englezos discussed his transition from an international graduate student to a Professor. He provided important tips and strategies for seeking academic jobs as well as industrial jobs. He shared his observations on his past graduate students which served as good examples on how to become successful during and after graduate studies.
Professor Englezos provided a comprehensive picture of faculty hiring process in our department as well as other chemical departments across Canada. He stressed the need for starting preparation well ahead of graduation. He explained how leadership and other soft skills could add to the fundamental and applied knowledge to make one an ideal candidate for faculty position.
At the end, he acknowledged the contribution of his parents, family, mentors, former and current students, colleagues, funding agencies and industrial sponsors to the successes of his career. His presentation was followed by an active question and answer session.
The event was attended by current and former graduate students, post-doctorate fellows, and faculty members from CHBE. The seminar attracted graduate students from other departments as well.
