A team from The Oil&Gas Initiative at UBC participated for the first time in the Case Competition at the University of Calgary, on March 19 & 20. The topic of the competition was assessing the establishment of a fictitious Chinese national oil exploration company in the Canadian Petroleum Industry. A Total of 17 teams participated in the competition and the participants were from all over Canada such as from BCIT, University of Alberta, University of Calgary, and University of Toronto. The UBC team included CHBE students Ayesha Shahzad, Fahim Salam, Zishan Abdullah, Aaron Tan and Christine Yi.

The event incorporated a full day of Conference held at Marriott Downtown Calgary hosted by University of Calgary. The Alberta Student Energy Conference is a one-day student-organized conference that aims to bring students and industry professionals together. In the past, ASEC has welcomed over 250 students from across Alberta from Business, Engineering and Science faculties. This year’s conference provided students with excellent educational talks, networking opportunities, a career fair and a case competition which brought to the foreground important industry issues like crude by rail, fracking, renewable energy and more. The 2015 conference covered a variety of similar topics and provided the opportunity for students from across the country to learn about today’s relevant technologies in the energy industry.
