Speaker Series
information
The Series was launched in 2005 with the ambitious goal to allow CHBE students the opportunity to learn about the most recent technological and career-related developments in chemical and biological engineering profession, and participate in advanced research and innovation. Our department invites distinguished industry leaders, academic and/or alumnus to speak on a variety of topics within the profession.

Background Information

Julia, who dedicated 20 years of service to UBC, the latter 7 to the Chemical and Biological Engineering Department, retired as the Department's Administrator on August 31, 2006. To mark her retirement and to give back to the Department she has helped to grow and evolve over the years, Julia made a gift of $30,000 to enable the establishment of the Speaker Series endowment fund. Julia's gift is matched by the Faculty of Applied Science to create a $60,000 endowment, with the aim of growing the fund over time through donations to $ 120,000 that would help support the lectures in perpetuity.
In July 2007, Mr. John Tiedje, Applied Science Alumni lent support to Speaker Series. Mr. Tiedje finished his BASc in Chemical Engineering in 1944 and his MASc in Chemical Engineering in 1945, and knows the importance of a good education. He contributed a gift of shares to the University of British Columbia, half of which - around $45,000 - will be used to support the Chemical and Biological Engineering Speaker Series.
Mr. Tiedje and his wife enjoy their retirement in Sarnia along the shores of Lake Huron. Prior to his retirement, he enjoyed a 40-year career with Imperial Oil which was spent mostly in Sarnia but also included two years in Rouen, France with his family while he was Research Director for Esso France. He remembers the time with pleasure, as does his wife. He retired in 1984, after eleven years managing Imperial’s Research Centre in Sarnia.
Later in 2007, The Speaker Series received a boost of funding from the Estate of Mr. Leslie Gould as part of the Elizabeth and Leslie Gould Teaching Professorship in Chemical Engineering. For each of the next two years, the professorship will contribute $30,000 to the Series as a match for the generous contribution from Ms. Julia Sung in 2006.
The Department and the Faculty are sincerely grateful to all donors for enabling this initiative to be brought to fruition.
The seminars are open to the public, although individual meetings with the speaker may be limited to CHBE community. More information or if you wish to be added to our mailing list for the seminar announcements, please contact Ms. Anna Jamroz at ajamroz@chbe.ubc.ca
