Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)

CHBE strives to maintain a safe, healthy and secure working environment for work and study.

Safety is EVERYONE’S responsibility.

The health and safety of all Department members including students, staff, faculty and visitors is a priority. Department members contribute to creating a healthy, safe environment meeting UBC Policies and appropriate regulatory bodies.

The Department HSE Committee includes faculty, staff, and students who meet monthly to discuss Health, Safety and Environmental issues and opportunities for improvements, and to review any safety incidents that have occurred. The minutes of each meeting are posted on bulletin boards in the Department.

The Department provides mandatory HSE orientations for all CHBE members. For undergraduate students, this is a key part of lab courses. For all other personnel, the presentations are provided at the beginning of the fall, winter and spring terms. If you have questions about how to attend the next planned HSE orientation, please contact safety@chbe.ubc.ca.

Our objectives are to ensure the health and safety of faculty, staff, students and visitors in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering.

Teaching and research activities in the Department are guided by regulatory requirements and by UBC policies.  As outlined in UBC Policy #7, University Safety (PDF), all Department faculty, staff and students have a role to play in maintaining a healthy, safe and environmentally sustainable university.   The responsibilities include developing, implementing and maintaining all elements of the safety program in their work activities.
