Welcome to Professor Chester Upham

The Department of Chemical & Biological Engineering is pleased to announce Dr. Chester Upham will join the faculty as Assistant Professor January 1st, 2020. Dr. Upham holds a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from McGill University and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of California Santa Barbara where he studied under Eric McFarland and Horia Metiu. His research interests are in reaction engineering and catalysis related to green processes and products.  His background is in developing heterogeneous catalysts for the production of CO2-free fuels and chemicals.

Dr. Upham’s postdoctoral fellowship was at Stanford University under Thomas Jaramillo. He also spent several years in industry. Before his Ph.D., he was the Director of Development at Carbon Sciences and a Process Engineer at Kimberly-Clark. Recently he has been working on commercializing his Ph.D. work as part of C-Zero, a company started to produce CO2-free hydrogen. He says, “I am delighted to join such a well-regarded faculty. I look forward to hitting the ground running in January!”
